A professional motorcycle racer travels cross-country and meets a variety of women he uses in an attempt to replace Daisy, his only true love.
Genre: Feature Film-Drama
Rating: UN
Release Date: 7-AUG-2007
Media Type: DVD

After its scandalous screening at the 2004 Cannes film festival, Vincent Gallo's The Brown Bunny was cut from 118 to 92 minutes, and that made all the difference. The film that critic and long-time Cannes attendee Roger Ebert originally called "the worst film in the history of the festival" was transformed, by Gallo's judicious editing, into a perfectly acceptable if not universally respected art-house curio, widely criticized yet ripe for cult status, able to stand beside Gallo's Buffalo 66 as the work of a genuine artist with a singular vision. Yes, that vision is self-indulgent, narcissistic, and likely to turn off a majority of viewers with its glacial pace and endless shots of Gallo driving, driving, and driving some more. But in portraying a melancholy motorcycle racer who drives cross-country while mourning a private loss that remains secret until the final scenes, Gallo gives us a character, and a film, that feels spiritually akin to such early '70s classics as Five Easy Pieces and Two-Lane Blacktop. It's a flawed yet ultimately moving example of maverick, unconventional cinema, and while Chloe Sevigny's explicit oral sex scene with Gallo is completely unnecessary, it's just one more element that places The Brown Bunny firmly, and refreshingly, out of the mainstream. --Jeff Shannon

Lush and Breezy

I liked the film...esp the soundtrack choices....a little oral sex never hurt anyone.....an enjoyable experience.

Besides the porn scene, A very good art film

If you have patience and enjoy art films, this is really fine stuff. Gallo compells the audience with mood, humor, and sheer will. His energy as a filmmaker is through the roof and hypnotic.

The only downsides are the porn scene with Sevigny(it really was not needed and adds nothing, feels tacked on.) And also the fact that the movie has a heroin 70's feel to it that you see in magazine ads all the time. So it's not that original a style.

Those complaints aside, it's shows a lot of heart and courage.

Most boring film I have seen

Thank goodness for 4X fast speed - other than the beautiful photography, which is across the country from the car, NOTHING happens except for the highly publicized sex scene (which could have been tastfully edited to a few shots, rather than coming across like a porno). This "could" have been a good 10 minute short. I cringed when I just read that it was originally 118 minutes. THANK goodness I rented....

Genius way of portraying a real-life problem!

If you have short concentrating span, I suggest you skipped some scenes but it may elude you from the portraying of the tormented feelings.

Vincent Gallo strikes again

If you like films that are heavy on emotion, light on dialog then you'll like Brown Bunny. Introspective, self indulgent, seemingly superficial but ultimately very powerful. It will stay with you long after you've seen it, which is more than i can say for the last 9 or so films i've seen.
